Field Trip: Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in Liberty County, Garden of Eden Trail – Saturday, March 31, 2018
We will make stops along the tracks looking for a wide variety of butterflies. We should see swallowtails, sulphurs, duskywings, hairstreaks and others. We may get a sighting of the rarely-observed Cofaqui Giant-Skipper. Whilst it has been seen at this location in past years, seeing one is possible but not at all certain. We might also get lucky and see Brown Elfin, Common Roadside-Skipper, and Sleepy Duskywing. These have also been seen in past years at this location but are rare sightings too. Travel time to the site is about 1 hour. To carpool from Tallahassee meet in front of Newk’s in the Village Square shopping center off Thomasville Road to leave at 9:00 AM (EDT). This will be an all-day trip so bring lunch, water, insect protection, sun protection, and close-focusing binoculars. Bathroom facilities are sparse and cell phone service is spotty. For more information or if you have questions, please contact Brian Lloyd (850) 212 0058 or bvlflorida@gmail.com. Extended Chapter Field Trip: the Outer Banks, NC – April 13-15, 2018
Eric Shaw will lead an extended (3-day weekend) trip to the North Carolina coast on Friday, April 13 – Sunday, April 15, to search for the recently described Crystal Skipper (split from Dusted Skipper). Please note that this is a date change from the dates originally noticed in the calendar. This will involve a long (10+ hour) drive to get to the site. Depending on time, we will also visit Croatan National Forest to search for Carolina Roadside Skipper and Holly Azure. We may head back via a less direct route to check the Piedmont area for Cobweb Skipper. If the weather looks bad, we may possibly head to south Florida instead. If interested contact Eric Shaw at eshaw@rocketmail.com. Submitted by Eric Shaw
Chapter Volunteer Oportunities Available
Our chapter regularly gets requests to attend local events and talk about our passion for the outdoors and butterflies. Spring time is an especially busy time for these requests. Many of these events are ones that you may want to attend yourself. In addition, in conjunction with The Grove’s staff, our chapter has been the sole co-leaders at The Grove’s monthly nature hikes held on the third Saturdays of most months on the Call-Collins property near downtown Tallahassee (http://thegrovemuseum.com/nature/).
Here are upcoming events at which various organizers would like a representative from our Hairstreak chapter:
April 6 – 7th, Falling Waters State Park Heritage Fair, Chipley, FL
April 14th, Tallahassee Garden Club Spring Bazaar, Tallahassee, FL
April 21st, The Grove Nature Walk, Tallahassee, FL
April 28th, Lake Jackson Aquatic Preserve Fun Paddle, Tallahassee, FL
May 12th, IFAS 2018 Spring Open House, Tallahassee, FL
May 19th, The Grove Nature Walk, Tallahassee, FL
If your schedule permits, please consider representing the Hairstreak Chapter at one of these events. We can provide a display board and literature for you if needed for the event and all you need to do is to show up and share your enthusiasm and love of nature and butterflies. To put your name down for representing our chapter at one of the above events, please contact Dean Jue at djue.hairstreak@gmail.com or call him at (850) 386-1393 (Leave a message if needed).
